چکیده

This paper deals with the problem of the projection of arguments, i.e., how the arguments of a predicate are integrated into a syntactic structure. My starting point is the model offered in Borer (1993). This model is defined by Borer as a 'syntactic predicate based account' of the projection of arguments. In the next section I will briefly sketch the different approaches to the problem of argument projection, bringing some evidence from variable behaviour verbs that motivates a predicate-based syntactic account. Borer's model is presented in the third section. Finally, I examine a case which was not dealt with in Borer (1993), that of ditransitives, and suggest some modifications to that model.

Verb Semantics and Double Object Constructions A constraint-based approach to Double Object Constructions in German

This paper treats verbs of diverse syntactic and semantic origins that enter into preposition-less double object constructions in German. It develops a fine-grained semantics within a lexicalist approach to grammar. Three semantic components are recognized: situation schemata which represent situational knowledge in the form of a matrix of abstract participant constellations; the attribute desi...

An Aspectual Classification of English Ditransitive Verbs

In this paper I examine the types of events associated with ditransitive verbs that describe caused possession by looking at their lexical aspectual properties, a methodology that has proven fruitful for the exploration of (in)transitive verbs. I show that as a whole these ditransitives share a number of aspectual properties in common with (in)transitive verbs of change of state and motion, sug...

A Corpus-based Study of the German Recipient Passive

In this paper, we investigate the usage of a non-canonical German passive alternation for ditransitive verbs, the recipient passive, in naturally occuring corpus data. We propose a classifier that predicts the voice of a ditransitive verb based on the contextually determined properties of its arguments. As the recipient passive is a low frequent phenomenon, we first create a special data set fo...

Ditransitive Alignment and Referential Hierarchies in Araki

Since Bossong (1985), referential hierarchies have proven useful in accounting for patterns of differential object marking (DOM) in monotransitive clauses. More recent studies (Siewierska 1998; Haspelmath 2005; Bickel 2008; papers in this volume) have also shown the relevance of such hierarchies in explaining the alignment patterns of ditransitive verbs – that is, how languages treat formally t...
